A recent conversation with a fellow blogger has inspired me to stir up some memories of my trip to the Eastern coast of Canada. My parents took my sister and me via motor home, a.k.a Minnie Winnie to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. We went “trailer trash” and stayed in multiple trailer parks throughout each province. It was the way to do it back then! Gas was so much cheaper and it was an economically efficient way to travel.
Even though I was a lot younger then, I was still old enough to be “wowed” by the beautiful sights and really appreciate my home country. The province of Nova Scotia is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean almost completely. Even though it’s the second smallest province, it actually has the most universities than any other province. It is more well known for its lobster (the province itself is even shaped like a lobster!) and high tides. The Bay of Fundy is the body of water that separates Nova Scotia from New Brunswick and it has the highest tides in the world.
We went whale watching in St. Andrews by the Sea, New Brunswick, on a little zodiak boat to ensure we got up nice and close. The further we went, the mistier it became. Since my sight was hindered because of the fog, my hearing was heightened. I can still hear the sound of the whale’s blow hole, and I remember excitedly looking back and forth to catch a glimpse of a whale among the fog and mist. Although I only saw glimpses of fins and tails here and there, I still felt completely engrossed, by hearing the whale’s breaths and its grand, slow movements through the water.

Great photos, and I love the whale watching story. We almost took the ferry to Nova Scotia when we were in Bar Harbor, Maine; I wish we had, especially since it’s now discontinued. Guess I’ll have to add that to my Canada road trip :-)

Usually I take a big trip every couple of years, but I’d like to start doing it every year (last year I did both Europe and South America). In the years we don’t do a big trip we usually stay in Cape May, which we’ve come to think of as our home away from home.
Very cool. Europe and South America in one year is a pretty epic year! Anywhere in particular you’d like to go on your next big trip? I can’t decide between SE Asia or Southern Africa. After NZ, that is :)
A lot depends on my wife’s availability to take vacation. If she’s available, I’m thinking of a road trip to either Canada or Yellowstone. If I’m on my own, maybe the Galapagos or somewhere in the UK. Then again, once I see your NZ posts and photos, I may be tempted to go there :-)
I definitely want to visit Asia one day, and Africa would be awesome. Where in particular were you thinking?
Yellowstone looks so cool, and the Galapagos are actually on my “Dreams” list! In Asia I want to visit Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam (the emphasis on Vietnam), and South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Zambia in Africa. That Namib desert looks so incredible!
Sounds great. I just finished watching that Africa series on the Discovery channel, definitely made me want to visit there. And I’d love to see Angkor Wat in Cambodia some day.
Halifax is my second fave Canadian city after Vancouver (hope that justifies my Geography Degree!) ;o)
